Adopting a dog in South Africa

How do I adopt a dog from the SPCA?

Visit or call your nearest SPCA, meet the dogs, and fill in their adoption form. Most do a home check before the dog goes home. The adoption fee usually covers sterilisation, first vaccinations, deworming and a microchip.

How much does it cost to adopt a dog?

Each SPCA and shelter sets its own fee, and it usually covers sterilisation, vaccinations and a microchip. Ask the shelter for its current fee; it's often far less than those vet costs on their own.

What do I need to adopt a dog?

Usually an ID document, proof of address, and a secure yard or a plan for exercise. Some shelters ask that everyone at home meets the dog first, and that other dogs meet it too.

Can NogPets help me rehome my dog?

Yes. Post your dog on the NogPets dog board for free. A person checks every post, and people looking for a dog like yours can contact you. NogPets doesn't sell dogs.

Where do I report animal cruelty?

Call your local SPCA's inspectorate. Their numbers are on each SPCA's page here. The NSPCA's national number is on nspca.co.za.
