How often should you bathe a dog?

Most dogs need a bath every 4 to 8 weeks, or when they're dirty or smelly. More often can dry the skin; less often is fine for short-coated dogs that stay clean. Always use a dog shampoo and dry them fully.

A guide

  • Coats that keep growing (poodles, Maltese): every 4 to 6 weeks, with the cut
  • Double coats: every 6 to 8 weeks, with a de-shed
  • Short coats: every 8 to 12 weeks
  • Dogs that swim, roll or have skin conditions: as your vet advises

Do it right

  • A dog shampoo: human shampoo is the wrong pH for their skin
  • Brush out knots before the bath: water makes mats tighter
  • Rinse well: leftover shampoo itches
  • Dry right to the skin, especially thick coats, or it can lead to sore skin and a damp smell
  • Keep water out of the ears

Questions

Can I use baby shampoo on my dog?

It's gentler than adult shampoo but still not made for dogs' skin. A mild dog shampoo is better.

Why does my dog still smell after a bath?

Often a coat that didn't dry right through, ears that need cleaning, teeth, or skin that needs a vet's look.
