Tick and flea wash for dogs

A tick and flea wash is a bath, then a rinse that kills the ticks and fleas on your dog that day. It doesn't protect for weeks, so pair it with a monthly tick and flea treatment from your vet.

What happens

  • A bath with a dog shampoo to lift dirt and loosen ticks
  • A tick and flea rinse left on for a few minutes, then rinsed or dried
  • A comb through to check for ticks the rinse missed, especially ears, between the toes, armpits and under the collar
  • Nails, if you want

Why it matters in South Africa

Ticks are common in gardens, parks and veld across the country, and some carry diseases like tick bite fever (biliary). If your dog is quiet, off food or has pale gums after a tick, see a vet the same day.

Fleas cause itching and skin infections, and can bring tapeworm.

How long it lasts

A wash clears what's on the dog now. New ticks can climb on the next walk. A monthly chew, spot-on or collar from your vet is what keeps them off; the wash is the reset.

Questions

How often should my dog have a tick and flea wash?

When you find ticks or fleas, or every 4 to 6 weeks in summer if your dog walks in long grass. Keep up the monthly treatment from your vet in between.

Is a tick wash safe for puppies and cats?

Many products aren't. Tell the groomer your pet's age and whether it's a cat: they choose a product made for it, or skip the rinse.

Should I pull ticks off myself?

Use a tick remover or fine tweezers, grip close to the skin and pull straight out. Don't squeeze the tick or put anything on it first.
