Your puppy's first groom

Book the first groom once your puppy has finished their vaccinations, usually around 12 to 16 weeks. Keep it short and gentle: a bath, a light tidy and nails. The goal is a puppy who learns that grooming is calm and easy.

What happens

  • A warm, gentle bath with a puppy shampoo
  • A quiet blow-dry, starting on low
  • A tidy of the face, feet and bottom, no full cut
  • Nails, or just handling the paws if they're nervous
  • Lots of breaks and praise

Get ready at home

  • Touch their paws, ears and mouth every day, with a treat
  • Brush for a minute at a time
  • Let them hear a hair dryer from across the room
  • Stand them on a table or bench for a few seconds, with a hand on them

Why start early

Puppies that get used to grooming young grow into dogs that stand still and stay calm, which makes every groom faster, safer and cheaper for life. Breeds whose hair keeps growing need it most.

Questions

How old should a puppy be for its first groom?

After its puppy vaccinations, usually 12 to 16 weeks. Ask your vet if you're not sure.

Does a puppy need a full haircut?

No. A first groom is a bath, a light tidy and nails. Full cuts come later, once they're used to it.
